Jababeka Strengthens Steps Towards Sustainable Industrial Estate

Cikarang, January 8-9, 2025PT Jababeka Tbk (Jababeka) as an independent city developer based on industrial zones, continues to show its commitment to creating sustainable industrial zones. This was marked by Jababeka organizing a workshop themed “Emission Mapping and Decarbonization Strategy Capacity Building” on January 8-9, 2025. The workshop involved around 30 participants representing four independent city projects under the auspices of Jababeka, namely the manager of the Jababeka Cikarang Industrial Zone, Kendal Industrial Zone – a result of collaboration with Sembcorp, the Tanjung Lesung Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and the Morotai SEZ.

Aligning understanding for decarbonization

This workshop was held so that the four area managers would have the right understanding, uniformity, and clear standards for implementing the decarbonization program and could calculate the reduction of carbon emissions. According to Reza Widyaprastha, HR Director of PT Jababeka Tbk, this workshop is very important for Jababeka so that the implementation of the decarbonization program prepared by area managers is systematic, measurable, and effective in reducing carbon emissions.

“Emissions mapping and decarbonization strategy formulation is not just about theory, but more importantly, about how it translates into concrete policies that can be implemented at the operational level of companies. This is an ongoing process that requires a long-term commitment from all teams involved,” said Reza Widyaprastha in his speech.

The workshop—the result of collaboration between Jababeka NZICC and WRI Indonesia—mainly addressed the basics of net zero, emission mapping and calculation techniques, and the development of decarbonization strategies that can be applied practically in the region. The speakers were all analysts from WRI Indonesia, a research institution that has carried out many environmental sustainability initiatives.

In its material, WRI Indonesia provided a very technical and in-depth presentation on emission mapping and calculation methodologies, as well as relevant decarbonization strategies for implementation in industrial and tourism areas.

Help regional tenants accelerate energy transition

Further, this workshop also provides practical guidance for area managers to facilitate tenants in the region in accelerating the energy transition, through emission mapping and developing decarbonization programs. Through interactive sessions, participants were given insight into sustainable energy policy implementation strategies, environmentally friendly technology solutions, and efficient ways to optimize energy use in industrial estates.

“It is hoped that this workshop can be an important first step in accelerating the transformation towards a greener, more efficient, and sustainable area,” explained Reza Widyaprastha.

One of the interesting things in this workshop is the interactive discussion session, where participants are given the opportunity to contribute to designing a decarbonization strategy based on real case studies faced by area managers.

As a result, various innovative solutions have been identified by the four managers of Jababeka’s area, such as energy recovery from waste to energy, sustainable waste management with the concept of zero waste to landfill, and the development of renewable energy, especially solar farming, to support greener industrial estate operations.

Furthermore, workshop participants also discussed various nature-based initiatives that can be done to support carbon neutrality, such as mangrove planting that has been carried out by the management of the Jababeka Cikarang Industrial Estate, as well as the expansion of green areas within the area to increase carbon sequestration.

Overall, concluded Reza Widyaprastha, this workshop is not only an activity to share knowledge but also part of Javabera’s commitment to lead the transformation towards a more sustainable industrial estate. With an approach that involves all parties, Jababeka and external partners, such as WRI Indonesia, are optimistic that they can create a productive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable industrial estate in the long term. It can even be an example for other industrial estates in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia.
